Microsoft founder Bill Gates and a number of private and public partners, including Germany, have launched a new coalition to improve the reaction time to epidemics.

The Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) aims to employ new advances in medicine to significantly shorten the development of new vaccines from years to a matter of months.

“It looks at what happened with Ebola and Zika and tries to get ahead of that,” Mr. Gates told Handelsblatt in an exclusive interview.

Donors have pledged $460 million to CEPI so far. The Bill & Melinda Gates foundation has contributed $100 million while Japan and Norway have pledged $100 to $125 million over five years.

Germany, for its part, has allocated $10 million in CEPI’s first year. Mr. Gates anticipates that Berlin may contribute more in the coming years.

“Germany has shown a real interest in this both because of its importance to the world and because German science and German companies may play a significant role in this,” Mr. Gates said.
