Berlin, mon amour
Monday marks the 55th anniversary of the Élysée Treaty between France and Germany. The agreement was signed in 1963 to draw the two former enemies closer after three wars since 1870. This weekend, Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron agreed to further strengthen the bloc and plan a new bilateral deal. Bring out the champagne — or Riesling. Source:

A radio tower formerly used by American forces in Germany was demolished at the weekend. Police had used it after US troops withdrew from the Benjamin Franklin village base, located in the Funari Barracks near Mannheim, in 2012. Affordable housing is planned for the space. Source:

Green with envy?
Doubts were cast after the Social Democrats narrowly persuaded its members to support coalition talks. The SPD is deeply divided, with weakened leadership and its youth wing fervently opposing a coalition. The Green Party had been part of earlier talks, which collapsed after the pro-business FDP walked out.
