The 55-year old state premier of Saarland, a small state in southwest Germany, is set to become the secretary of Ms. Merkel’s Christian Democrats, making Ms. Kramp-Karrenbauer the number two in the party’s hierarchy after the chancellor. Tesla is made in America, but it relies heavily on German suppliers for its parts (just as many other carmakers in the world). Even Mercedes-maker Daimler, a former Tesla shareholder, delivers components to the electric-car pioneer.

Speaking of the Mercedes-Benz maker: Newspaper Bild reported US investigators found software in some Mercedes cars which may have helped them pass diesel emissions tests. Daimler's shares fell as much as 2.4 percent in Frankfurt.
