Through the cracks
The Federal Office for Migration and Refugees is struggling with inefficiencies, according to a report by Germany's Bild newspaper. Bureaucrats have reviewed less than 1 percent of asylum decisions, or 11,000 of 1.65 million rulings, since the beginning of the refugee crisis. Critics fear a high rate of error in the approval or denial of asylum applications. The head of the ministry's Bremen office is also under investigation for approving invalid applications.

The United Nations Peacekeeping Forces celebrates its 70th anniversary this year and is running significantly more operations these days. In comparison, Germany contributed 830 soldiers in 2018.
