Politicians have been given new fodder in the debate about Germany's refugees and migrants after a new study showed that Lower Saxony, a state in northern Germany, saw a 10.4 percent increase in violent crimes committed in 2014 and 2015. The study, which was paid for by Germany's Ministry of Family Affairs, reported that more than 90 percent of the increase was traced to migrants.

The French president announced plans to fight fake news in France with a new law, a few days after new German legislation went into effect that requires social media sites to remove hateful or false information within 24 hours of a complaint being filed.

If tennis star Angelique Kerber and her teammate Alexander Zverev stay undefeated against the Australian team, then Germany could advance to Saturday's final for the first time in over 20 years.
