Handelsblatt's annual roundup of people of the year named the French president as 2017's winner. German foreign minister Sigmar Gabriel wrote a brief profile of his French counterpart for the paper, saying that Mr. Macron was a visionary "with a heart that beats for Europe and the will to enact genuine reforms." Income inequality has been growing worldwide since the 1980s, with the US outpacing Europe. In Germany the wealthiest 10 percent own around 40 percent of the national income, the same as in 1913, shortly before World War 1.
