It was undoubtedly the biggest shock of 2016: Real estate baron and reality TV star Donald Trump decisively beat Hillary Clinton to take the White House and succeed Barack Obama as America’s 45th president. His victory followed the most vicious campaign in memory. But based on the vagaries of the U.S. electoral college, the outcome was never in doubt, even though Ms. Clinton won the popular vote with a 3-million vote margin. Allegations of Russian cyber-hacking on behalf of Mr. Trump, an ostensible Putin supporter, led to calls for congressional investigations. German chancellor Angela Merkel extended her hand but admonished Mr. Trump to respect shared European values. So far, Mr. Trump has made no plans to visit Germany. He is set to be inaugurated on January 20.
