Stardom can be found in many places. So it is a bit of a surprise to find the Victoria Beckham’s London multi-million-euro-empire so hidden away. Ms. Beckham, formerly Posh Spice of the girl-band-phenomena, the Spice Girls. Ms. Beckham, wife of the famous footballer. Ms. Beckham, the global glamour-phenomenon. A girlish dream. The style-icon. The fashion-designer. And most recently, after the British Queen awarded the 42-year-old an OBE, making her an “Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire.”
Which is why it seems odd that we are entering an inconspicuous courtyard near Battersea Park, near the Thames. Small shops, small houses. No glamour, no stage lights. Not even a name on the buzzer. You need a code to enter. In the small reception area sits a young woman alone at her neat desk, with her Apple screen and the telephone. It’s not about branding here. It’s about hard work. And behind the next door is the same kind of madness one would find in any fashion atelier: Lots of samples everywhere and tables full sketches of the new collection. And in the middle of it all, with her strong presence, the boss. Wow, in a sports dress and sneakers!
