German automakers Audi, BMW and Mercedes-maker Daimler kept important technology from falling into the hands of their Silicon Valley rivals when they purchased Nokia’s mapping service HERE last year.

Though they managed to fend off U.S. tech giants such as Uber, the German automakers lack the user data Google has as well as the digital know-how to develop HERE into a reliable platform for autonomous driving.

With HERE firmly in their hands, they are now searching for new investors with enough expertise to make their investment in the mapping service pay off. The automakers shelled out €2.8 billion, or $3.1 billion, for HERE, which has revenues of €1.2 billion.
