Lei Jun likes to project a prodigious self-confidence. But even so, his most recent forecast is surprising.

“We will overtake Apple within 10 years,” said the head of the Chinese electronics maker Xiaomi.

In just four years, Xiaomi has established itself as one of the world’s leading mobile phones manufacturers. It is just one example of the speed with which technology firms from China are aiming to lead the field.

“In the future, Chinese companies will be among the front-runners,” Mr. Jun said.

Asian companies’ ambitions will be on show in Germany this week. China is a partner country at CeBIT, the world’s largest trade fair for information technology. Top Chinese brands such as computer maker Lenovo, online trade platform Alibaba and telecoms firms Huawei and ZTE will showcase their capabilities at the trade fair in Hanover in northwest Germany.
