German mail and logistics giant Deutsche Post is replacing its diesel-powered mail delivery vans with new electrical vehicles in a move to reduce its substantial carbon footprint and lower transportation costs. The company is also considering selling the vehicle to smaller trade firms, such as plumbers and electricians.

In a first step, the postal service provider plans to replace all vans in Bonn, where the company is located, by the end of next year, with a significant number of its 35,000 delivering vehicles to follow. It has already put e-vans on streets in Aachen and Berlin.

Deutsche Post has developed the vehicle, called the StreetScooter, in cooperation with Aachen’s technical RWTH University and a consortium of mid-sized companies and research and development insitutions. At the end of last year, the firm acquired Screetscooter and its 100 employees for an estimated €2 million, or $2.2 million.
