    Why it matters

The trade services union, Verdi, has managed to get under the collar of normally sedate Deutsche Post CEO Frank Appel, after accusing the world’s largest mail and courier firm of using civil servants as strike breakers in a showdown over wage increases and working hours.

  • Facts

    • Frank Appel  told Deutsche Post shareholders that the union  Verdi is “fear mongering” to force workers to fall in line behind the union.
    • Mr. Appel’s chief negotiator, Jürgen Gerdes, and Verdi’s chief negotiator, Andrea Kocsis, do not like each other, making efforts to achieve a new agreement even more difficult.
    • At stake is whether Deutsche Post hits the €200 million in additional profits under Mr. Appel, or whether profits will drop by as much as 20 percent if the union prevails.
