Cologne Attacks Intensify Immigration Debate

As the first moments of 2016 were being rung in, mass sexual attacks on women were reported at public celebrations in Cologne and other German cities, allegedly perpetrated by refugees and men of North African and Arab descent. More than 1,000 victims filed police reports, mainly involving sexual harassment and petty theft. One woman said she was raped. The political fallout damaged Ms. Merkel and her decision to let in more than 1 million refugees, which led to a string of state election defeats for her Christian Democrat party.
